Nikkiso provides CO2 system to support commissioning of Canada’s first Direct Air Capture facility

Temecula, Calif. – Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases Group (Nikkiso CE&IG) announced today that it has supported the successful commissioning of Deep Sky Alpha, Canada’s first facility to successfully capture and sequester CO2 in sedimentary storage, and the world’s first cross-technology DAC platform, located in Alberta.


The project underscores Nikkiso CE&IG’s role as a technology partner for a wide range of emerging carbon removal and carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure. Nikkiso CE&IG delivered the centralized CO2 purification and liquefaction system that serves as the final processing stage for all captured CO2 produced at the facility. This system processes the combined output from all DAC units at the facility and is designed with the flexibility to accommodate future DAC technologies as they are added, enabling safe handling, liquefaction, and permanent storage of CO2 at scale.

Following 18 months of engineering, manufacturing, and installation, Deep Sky Alpha is now fully operational as of August 2025. Deep Sky Alpha captures CO2 directly from the atmosphere, purifies and liquefies it, and permanently stores it underground. Powered by renewable solar energy, Deep Sky Alpha is designed to reduce operational emissions. Alpha supports carbon-negative operations by ensuring that more CO2 is removed from the atmosphere than is generated during the capture and processing lifecycle.

Designed as a technology-agnostic commercialization hub, Deep Sky Alpha can host up to 10 DAC systems operating under real-world conditions, allowing multiple capture approaches to be evaluated side by side. The facility is designed to remove up to 3,000 tons of CO2 per year, helping operationalize, commercialize and advance scalable, low-energy carbon removal technologies.

For this project, Nikkiso CE&IG delivered:

  • Complete CO2 purification and liquefaction systems
  • Integrated compressors, filtration, piping, control cabinets, and automation
  • A compact, containerized system designed for efficient deployment and future replication
